I REMEMBER the absolute necessity I felt –the do or die of becoming a digital nomad. I had everything to lose, and no idea of what I’d gain. I got fucking shingles from the existential dread just debating it in my own head.

I became a digital nomad, or a passport bro, when Western life was predictable and the slow creep of “I am the table!” was only just beginning. Today, that Western predictability and security is out the window.

Lockdowns made everyone a digital nomad –what will you do with that “work from home” option most jobs provide? You can start by creatively defining what “home” is.

My journey began as a passport bro in 2010 at 30 with the intention of starting a family –and I accomplished that along with becoming a six figure blogger; but there’s nuance I never elaborated on, until now.

Welcome to the New Hobo with a Laptop. Same guy, a more unfiltered perspective (because having a mild stroke and fucking with death a few times tends to change your vocabulary).

Expect the same useful tips and advice you’ve always been given; but with more personal stories, experiences, and reflections –all the things I was too cowardly to open up about before.

Starting Over

On December 5, 2022 a Google algorithm change completely leveled my income –and my marriage followed months later– I was no longer a six figure blogger. And our eight years and two sons didn’t account for much, I guess. But hey, it was probably something else, right?

In January 2025 we suffered permanent data loss and the 20 gigabyte file that was the original Hobo with a Laptop was corrupted. Along with all the photos, collaborative writings my wife and I shared, and all of the promise my former life held.

As a result, the New Hobo with a Laptop is starting from scratch; bringing back what we can from various cached versions across the web –and reinventing everything else.

And maybe that’s a blessing in disguise; forest fires bare fruit. At 44, I think I can handle another do over.

In 2021, the original Hobo with a Laptop was appraised at $550k USD. My life would be very different now if I was smarter and sold it.
